The Department of Electronic Media was established in 2002 as part of School of Media and Audiovisual Culture wider structure. It now operates there next to the Department of History and Theory of Film, and Culture Theory Department. Since the beginning of its existence, it has been managed by Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, professor PhD.

Research interests of the Department of Electronic Media focus on five main areas:

  • Issues of theory and history of media and new media, as well as communication practices and media institutions connected with them.
  • Issues of contemporary culture forming around new media – participation, social media, Web 2.0 and 3.0, virtualization of individuals and communities, forming social network communities.
  • New media art in broad sense – from video art and cybernetic art through interactive network art practices – both in theoretical and historical aspect.
  • Theory, history and critique of computer games, issues of interactive narration, game in art and mass culture
  • New media design, design of interaction and experience – theory, history and analysis of design practices in the context of digital communication and creative tools development

As part of Cultural Studies, the Department of Electronic Media carries out a specialization New Media.
